COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 24
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers pulled away from a tie game at halftime by holding Tampa to nine points in the third period and went on to take a 73-61 victory over the Spartans on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Regime McCombs led the Lady Tigers with a season-high 27 points, connecting on a season-high seven 3-pointers.
Dorothy Brown had a season-high 17 points and made a season-high five 3-pointers.
Destiny Betts recorded her second double-double of the season with a season-high 13 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds.
Benedict improves to 6-1 on the season. Tampa falls to 4-6.
Benedict had a 33-27 lead with 3:17 left in the second quarter after a 3-pointer by Brown. Tampa stormed back to take a 38-35 lead with seven seconds left in the half on a 3-pointer by Juliana Cavallaro. Betts threw up an off-balance heave at the buzzer and connected on her first 3-pointer of her career to tie the game at 38 at the half. Cavallaro led Tampa with 27 points.
After the Spartans scored the first basket of the second half, the Lady Tigers scored the next 12 points for a 50-40 lead on a 3-pointer by McCombs. Another 3-pointer by McCombs gave the Lady Tigers a 57-47 lead heading into the fourth period.
A jumper by Betts gave the Lady Tigers their biggest lead, 63-49, with 6:15 left to play.
Benedict held Tampa to 38.3 percent shooting for the game, and 28.57 for the second half. The Lady Tigers shot 44.6 percent. Benedict outrebounded Tampa 43-27.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Monday with a home contest against Erskine. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
