JACKSON, Tenn. –
Jordan Smith connected on five 3-pointers and scored 24 points to help lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 76-64 victory over Lane College in a rematch of last year's SIAC men's basketball championship game.
The Tigers improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the SIAC. Lane fell to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC.
Brennan Reynard added 16 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Rydealous Taylor added 12 points.
The Dragons took a 25-22 lead with 7:43 left in the first half before
Quayshun Hawkins tied the game with a 3-pointer. Hawkins was perfect on all three 3-point attempts and finished with 11 points. The Tigers went on a 19-3 run at the end of the first half to take a 46-29 lead before the Dragons cut the lead to 46-31 at the half.
Benedict kept a double-digit lead throughout the second half, with the Dragons getting as close as 10 points, 50-40, on a 3-pointer by Rodney Clarke with 17:06 left. Benedict scored six of the next seven points, including another 3-pointer by Hawkins, for a 56-41 lead with 13:45 on the clock. A jumper by
Jordan Smith gave the Tigers a 70-53 lead with 6:25 left.
Clarke led the Dragons with 11 points, while Devontay Clark added 10.
Benedict held Lane to 38.7 percent shooting.
Benedict wraps up its road trip with a game at Kentucky State on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
