COLUMBIA, S.C. – After the first two weeks of the season, Benedict College head coach
Ron Dickerson Jr. stressed how the team was young and was still learning each other. That crash course in teamwork is paying off as the Tigers are looking to extend their two-game winning streak on Saturday when they host North Greenville in a non-conference game.
Kickoff from Charlie W. Johnson Stadium is 3 p.m. Tickets are available at
www.benedicttickets.com. There is no television or live stream, but live stats are available
here.
"We're going in the right direction," Dickerson said. "We're going to take baby steps. We're not going to try and take giant steps. We're learning from our mistakes and capitalizing when we have opportunities."
Benedict is 2-2 overall after a strong defensive performance in last week's 21-5 victory over Morehouse, when the Tigers held the Maroon Tigers to under 100 yards of total offense, including negative 28 yards rushing.
"We're just working on little things. It was a good experience to get the bad taste out of your mouth. But after 24 hours after the last win, it's the next game. We came out and had a really great week of practice. We've got to continue to do the little things and be consistent and have discipline."
The North Greenville Trailblazers are 1-2 on the season, but that record may be deceiving. They opened the season with an overtime loss to Keiser University, the defending NAIA national champion, and lost to The Citadel, a Division I opponent. They are coming off a 29-7 Gulf South Conference victory over Mississippi College two weeks ago. Last week's scheduled home game against Shorter was cancelled due to the aftereffects of Hurricane Helene in the South Carolina Upstate.
"They're a good GSC team and the good thing about it is it's a non-conference game. Every game we play, we get to measure who we are. They're a very sound and disciplined team. They give multiple looks on defense and they'll do some things that will confuse you on offense. And defensively, they like to throw the ball and they've got some talented receivers. It's a great challenge and a great opportunity for us to measure who we are and where we're going."
