COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers overpowered rival Allen University for a 3-0 victory in women's volleyball action on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict won the match 25-12, 25-11, 25-21 to improve to 14-4 overall and 8-3 in the SIAC. Allen falls to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers hit .303 as a team, their second-highest hitting percentage this season, committing just 12 attack errors on 89 total attacks.
Mia Burgess led the attack with 13 kills and hit .500. She also had two of Benedict's 11 service aces.
Desire' Young also had a strong match, recording 11 kills while hitting .500. She also had four blocks.
Willow Alls recorded 22 assists and a team-high eight digs.
The Lady Tigers had runs of five and eight points in the first set to take a 22-9 lead and cruised to the 25-12 victory. The Lady Tigers took an early 10-4 lead in the second set, but Allen rallied to cut the lead to 13-10. After a Benedict error gave Allen a point, the Lady Tigers scored the final nine points of the set.
Allen hung tough in the third set, trailing 9-8 before Benedict scored the next six points. Benedict had an 18-10 lead before Allen scored five points in a row to cut the lead to 18-15. The Lady Tigers travel to Fort Valley, Ga., on Sunday to take on the Fort Valley State Wildcats at 2 p.m.
